Huddersfield Giants Adult Touch Rugby Team

Following the success of the Zone’s Touch Rugby for adults the RFL invited us to enter a team into their national competition, which was held at the John Charles Stadium in Leeds.

14 players played for The Zone Giants, which was made up of 7 ladies and 7 men which goes to show what great sport touch rugby is – at any level it can be played mixed and it has a great social element to it.

It was the first time ‘The Zone Giants’ had entered any competitions and with kind sponsorship from Gardinia Windows (Kirklees) Ltd and Haibull Electrical Ltd they were the talk of the teams in their sponsored T-Shirts.

Pouring rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm as the girls in the team were diving for the try line at every opportunity. The first two games resulted in 1 - 0 and 2 - 0 victories and the Zone Giants were feeling confident traveling into their third game – against a team from Manchester, called the Champions. Although the Champions had won their first two games 3 - 0 and 7 – 0 they were tested to the limit against us but time took control and couldn’t prevent us from narrowly losing 1 – 0.

These score lines guaranteed us a Quarter final position but we had to play a further game to decide this fixture as 2 teams were on the same points. The free lunch kindly provided by the RFL had kicked in by now and despite valiant efforts from every member of the squad the whistle again sounded too soon and we were defeated 2 – 1.

The Zone Giants felt confident in the quarters, playing a side from Leigh that had won every one of their pool games. The rain continued to pour but the skill levels remained high among the players and it was a very close game with both sides coming close to scoring - but determined defenses prevented this. The crowd were on their feet and very vocal but there had to be a winner and they eventually outpaced us and came away as 2 -1 victors.

The Zone Giants returned home with their heads held high, knowing that the opportunity may come again.

The eventual, and worthy, winners were The Champions so who knows? If we had beaten them first time around would we have met them in the Final?

We would like to thank the above mentioned sponsors for their invaluable contribution but also Peter Armitage Ltd Builders who ensured we traveled to the game in style and were able to enjoy a post match drink!

Come down to The Zone on a Wednesday night (7pm – 10pm) and give Adult Touch Rugby a TRY! Last week we had 36 players, 16 of which were female.
